Day 7: Cultural Dive
Understanding Formality

In Hindi, showing respect is very important and is built into the language. Using "aap" (formal you) versus "tum" (informal you) can completely change the tone of a conversation. "Aap" is used with elders, strangers, in professional settings, and with anyone you wish to show high respect to. "Tum" is for friends, family, and people your age or younger. Using the wrong one can be seen as disrespectful or overly formal. It's always safer to start with "Aap" if you are unsure.
